New Jersey’s Push for Expanded College Sports Betting

Last updated: August 14, 2024

New Jersey, a leader in the US betting industry, aims to permit wagering on in-state college sports through Resolution 140, introduced by Assemblyman Michael Venezia. The proposal seeks public approval to amend the State Constitution, allowing betting on local college teams despite game manipulation and match-fixing concerns.

New Jersey has been quite active in the United States betting market, becoming the pioneer in fighting against federal legislation and the key player in repealing the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, which paved the way for the passage of legalized regulated sports gambling across the country.

Assemblyman Michael Venezia has put forward Resolution 140, which aims to expand New Jersey’s sports betting market. This resolution would permit wagers on in-state college sports and events, as well as any local teams.

The bill is still in the Assembly of Tourism, Gaming, and the Arts Committee. Its objective is to change the State Constitution to legalize sporting betting regarding all college sports or athletic events via casinos and former horse racetracks.

New Jersey’s Debate Over College Sports Betting Legislation

Thus, betting on college sports with the participation of teams from New Jersey has been banned because of the threats of game-fixing and match-fixing, which have led to appeals from the NCAA and lawmakers throughout the United States to halt such stakes.

However, Assemblyman Michael Venezia has come up with Resolution 140 aimed at legalizing and betting on in-state college sports and events. This is a new policy shift within the proposed legislation, which would require the voters to approve it through a ballot similar to the earlier policy that was voted against with a 57% margin in the past years.

In November 2021, the people of New Jersey will vote on whether to expand the state sports betting legislation to include the Collegiate markets, in-stale teams and players. Therefore, there is an additional concern for linked jurisprudence regarding corruption in Collegiate sports.

Concerns Over Match-fixing in College and Professional Sports

Both college athletes and race car drivers have been in a similar situation, and suspected match-fixing has recently called for the NCAA to increase educational programs. The result of such behaviors is the blacklisting of certain players; they are presented with awareness campaigns meant to discourage them from betting.

Match-fixing has impacted professional leagues as well as collegiate athletics. Due to his involvement in such activities, Jontay Porter, a promising NBA talent with the Toronto Raptors, was recently handed a historic lifetime ban from the league.

The NCAA has also started several campaigns to raise awareness among athletes and the general public about problem gambling. These initiatives underscore ongoing concerns about the integrity of sports and the impact of illegal betting on both professional and collegiate athletics.
