Despite the state’s 51% gambling tax rate and strong competition from FanDuel and DraftKings, ESPN Bet’s deep pockets and brand recognition offer hope. The operator aims to leverage the ongoing football season for a successful debut.
According to various sources on Monday, ESPN Bet is on the brink of rolling out its sportsbook in New York after the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) gave its nod. The platform has outlined all the steps necessary to enter the state’s highly saturated sports betting market, and quite a few entrants have already shut down due to strict operating conditions.
ESPN Bet’s financial support to officially establish its operations in New York has provided the market entrance cost of $25 million. However, its outcome, which is still indeterminate in a field that proved to be unfriendly to most competitors, has caused further controversy.
New York is well known for its high taxes on gambling, with operators having to part with half of their gross gaming revenue. This high tax rate has changed the market structure because most small and mid-sized companies for betting have had to shut down or think twice about their operations.
Some operators are not willing to leave due to the concern of conceding the market to FanDuel and DraftKings. The same impact may apply to competition on the national level. Nevertheless, ESPN Bet’s future profitability in this environment will also be on the same par as those of others.
However, with all these impediments, ESPN Bet has an opportunity to put its reputable brand and many resources into practice in that state.
Jay Snowden, the CEO of PENN Interactive, the company that runs the ESPN Bet brand, has revealed confidence in his new sportsbook venture in New York. The launch comes during the beginning of the football season, and the operator can build on ESPN’s strong brand recognition. They are cautiously optimistic for their initial season.
If one recalls, Snowden had told investors that ESPN Bet would launch before the first week of the NCAAF season, but the agenda was not achieved.
However, with the football season still in progress and plenty of upcoming games, the company remains optimistic about capitalizing on the sports calendar.
In a recent statement, PENN confirmed through a spokesperson that ESPN Bet is preparing to launch within days, targeting a live rollout by the end of September.
College sports is a topic that ESPN Bet is entering with great caution because the company realizes that there is pressure from lawmakers and regulators regarding advertising targeting college students and student-athletes through gambling adverts. This approach is not unique, though, as ESPN Bet is set to tap into New York’s market, which has many competitors.
This is because the previous business, Wynn Interactive, lost the license to operate in New York after failing to meet the state’s high profitability bar, and ESPN Bet will fill this gap. Wynn’s resignation also shows how tough operating conditions are in the state, given that the regulators impose a high tax on the GGR. However, the future is looking bright for ESPN Bet, and there are no apparent reasons to think this will change.
That is why ESPN Bet will rely on two major factors in addition to its vast financial resources—brand-name recognition and the general culture of supporting sports and sporting events, primarily as an editor. Of course, it remains to be seen whether these advantages will allow it to capture market share from leading giants such as FanDuel and DraftKings.
