Dice have been used throughout history for gambling games dating back to medieval times in Norway. The question is often asked by gamblers wanting to find an edge but is it possible? Continue reading as we cover everything to know about how to cheat at dice with our beginner’s casino guide.
Gambling games and board games that use dice are great because of the uniformity that rolling the dice offer. These are games of chance, and the probability of each number outcome is typically the same.
For example, on a six-sided die, each number has a 16.67% chance of being rolled.
Unfortunately, it is extremely common for players and gamblers to want an edge over the dice. This is where cheat dice and cheating on dice rolling come into play.
Just a few years ago, archaeologists in Bergen, Norway, found a 600-year old cheat dice.
The dice discovered had been manipulated to remove the numbers one and two, instead replacing them with an added four and five.
This affected the probability of the dice outcome giving the four and five a 33.33% chance while the three and six remained at 16.67%. While it is unclear how the specific dice were used and which game – it was evident that the user would gain a substantial advantage.
There are many different ways to cheat at dice rolling; some of them are more subtle than others.
Loaded dice are easy to get your hands on; you can purchase them online and at some local gambling shops; however, these shops are few and far between these days. When using loaded dice to cheat at craps or dice games, it is undoubtedly one of the more complicated cheating methods to spot.
The critical thing to remember is that you should rotate your loaded dice with standard dice so that you aren’t getting the same favorable results every time. It will help to keep you off the radar of other players.
There are several ways to make loaded dice. The most common method is to drill into some of the numbered spots and fill the holes with a heavy substance. This will alter the momentum of the rolls, making the heavy side more likely to sit at the bottom.
Another trick that players have been known to try is to use microwaved dice. It can be tricky because you are dealing with somewhat melted dice. The visual aspects can be readily noticeable.
To create a microwaved dice, place the value you are aiming for on the bottom-side when placing it in the microwave. Turn it on and cook the dice for three to five seconds. This will melt the plastic and make your desired number lighter than the others.
Remember, the dice might be hot when you open the microwave, so be careful not to burn yourself.
The hardest of all dice cheating methods, controlled throws, are all about the technique. You will need plenty of practice to get this one right. To make a controlled dice throw, hold the dice sideways with your index finger and thumb on the one and six of the dice. You must then throw the dice in a controlled way so that the dice will roll with a higher probability of the two, three, four, and five being the outcome.
If you implement this strategy at a casino you will likely be noticed and asked to leave as the majority of casinos do not allow this approach in dice rolling gambling games.
The most common form of cheating at dice is to lie about the result blatantly.
This is impossible to do in structured environments like a casino table because the gaming staff has control. However, if you are playing a board game or dice in the street it is possible to lie about the dice roll outcome.
Other similar methods would be to roll in an obscured location and collect or disturb the dice. Doing so prevents other players from verifying the dice roll, but either way, these kinds of behaviors are looked at unfavorably.
Players will think you are cheating even if you aren’t doing so.
Flipping is the simple art of knocking or flipping over any dice that come up with one. You have to be quick though as it’s best to do it as the dice stop rolling.
To flip effectively, you will usually wait till other people look away or use a smooth motion of your hand over the dice. Because any result is better than one, there doesn’t need to be much precision when manipulating the outcome.
If you’re playing with people who are observant, you will struggle with deliberate manipulation of the die.
Unfortuantely, it is extremely difficult to cheat at craps, as well as any casino game for that matter. The environment is heavily controlled by the casino staff and obviously they do not want to pay out winnings to players unless they trulyy have to.
Many of the methods we’ve outlined in this article won’t work traditionally, however, you might be able to usue controlled dice throwing tactics. It wiill depend on the casino you play at and we recommend that you don’t stick to just one table.
So, in short, it is possible to cheat at craps but it is extremely difficult to be successful with it.
